As of right now, this tumblr is closed (only temporary) while I do battle with the effing CSS dickery they have built in. Bear with us.
Remember folks, the intent of this particular page was for updates on the pony printing, updates on specific orders, as well as a silly way for us to get in contact. We’ve been doing that, and right now this tumblr is shall we say in it’s metamorphosis phase.
Please do no worry, the tumblr will be updated fully by the end of the weekend, and details regarding everyone’s order will be put up by the end of the next week.
I’d been fighting the CSS a bit more than I’d like, I had a good design, then it’s getting the right graphic sizes, but enough of that:
Nightmare Moon has been going GLORIOUSLY! For starters…
Yeah, she looks pretty doesn’t she? Wait until you see her printed up tomorrow!
The raffle is pretty simple, in fact. $5 a ticket, with more prizes the more people buy. Just get all your friends interested. I’m getting ahead of myself, what ARE these prizes?
Nightmare Moon herself (a toy that’ll stand taller than any of our previous ones) done up in magnificent smoothness as we’ve mentioned in the past. We’ve figured the trick, and it’ll work great. She’ll have a lovely mane, some glow in the dark, and some nice metallics on her armor. Really, she’ll be bad-ass!
Then, what if you don’t win her? Well we ALSO have a free commission for the next winner! That’s right, a $50 value toy. You tell us what you want, and we get to work on it. It might take a while, but hey, hard to argue with the price eh?
Ok, that’s two prizes, but come on, there’s gotta be more, right? Yup, we’ve also been working on keychains! Yes-sir-ee we have been. Five winners will get special cutie mark keychains of their choice, even OC cutie marks!
Well that’s all well and good, but only seven prizes? That’s hardly enough for a raffle, it’s not smart to get your friends involved, there’s only seven prizes.
That’s where we start proving you wrong! See, after we sell 40 tickets (we’re a quarter the way there already, it’s incredible, we haven’t even started this yet.) we’ll be giving out another keychain prize every two tickets sold. 42 tickets means 6 keychains instead of 5.
But it’s a keychain, you want something better than that right? Well, every ten tickets after forty means an ADDITIONAL FREE PONY TOY! Whoa, right? That’s nuts. See, for 50 tickets sold, that means TEN KEYCHAINS, and TWO FREE PONIES, AND A ONE OF A KIND NIGHTMARE MOON!
Yeah, you got that right, a raffle where the MORE TICKETS SOLD means BETTER ODDS OF WINNING SOMETHING!
Lets go to a hypothetical now. Lets say we sell a hundred tickets. Crazy, absolutely impossible. That’d mean 35 keychains, 7 pony toys, and a grand prize of Nightmare Moon. Or said simply, 43 prizes!
So, lets see, 40 tickets and less, means there’s about a 1 in 5 chance of winning something. Fifty tickets put that at 1 in 4. Sixty brings it to nearly 1 in 3. A hundred makes it more than 40% odds of winning something.
Now that’s a raffle, damn it.
Where do you go to sign up? See that picture up there, click it. Send my partner a note, she’ll pass you along to which paypal to send it to, and we’ll enter you in for a drawing.
No deviantart? What kind of brony are you? The kind that’d need to send an email to email@example.com that is. I’ll get back to you on it that very evening when I check it.
Aversion to email AND deviatnart? What you live under a rock? Well, that rock might be your destiny, because EVERYONE uses Reddit. You just fire me a message on reddit, I’m zeehero, and I’ll guide you the rest of the way.
Don’t use paypal… well uhh… you can throw all the money at your screen but it won’t get you in, sorry.
The drawing ends on OCTOBER 31st. Also known as Nightmare Night (Halloween, you sillies, but we pony things up, like prizes, so we’ll pony up names too).
Have fun everyone, hope you’re all having a wonderful time. Tell your friends, and lets make this the best Nightmare Night ever!
Ok, step one, this page is gonna look a bit ugly for the next couple days as I get into a 48-hour staring contest with the CSS. Just know that we’ll get a better ascetic when it’s all said and done.
Step two, we’ve got a convention we’re prepping for, doesn’t mean we’re gonna stop printing ponies, just that we’re also in position to be vendors at conventions now! Crazy awesome, isn’t it? We’re already looking into a couple conventions next year, and if things go well, we’d LOVE to meet all of you someday.
Step three, hoo boy are we enjoying these new polishing pads and paintbrushes. We are getting much higher quality with every painted pony. Soon we’ll be pushing up against the best quality we can put out with PLA plastic, but that’s what the next printer is going to be for: amazingly smooth toys. We just gotta fight through rent, bills, and buying parts. So hopefully in two months we’ll have a major improvement to show off.
Something to rival the injection molded toys you see everywhere. How awesome would THAT be? We know about the grains in the model from the layers of plastic, we fight them with sandpaper, we fight them with heavy base coats of paint, and fight them with polishing the paint. Once we get a better supply of new parts and new plastic to work with, quality is going to rocket upwards. I promise it.
Finally, we have another ebay auction. Check out my partner’s dArt page here for more details, she’ll send you right to the link. Next we’ve also got slots for commissions open, hurry and snap them up quickly before they go, we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, and if you don’t snap them up now, we’ll just start working on other ponies for the convention.
Also, as if your wallets weren’t trembling in fear already, we’ll be doing a raffle for a very special edition Nightmare Night toy soon, featuring everyone’s favorite princess of the night. She’ll only be available in contests or as prize support, so you’ll have to have a little luck on your side to get her. But the plan is, in the same raffle, we’ll offer additional prizes. For starters, there’ll be a FREE commission you can win in this same raffle. And we’re working out the details, but if enough people enter, we’ll offer even MORE free commissions as prize support.
So once we get those details up, hopefully by the end of the week, you’ll know everything you need to know about the special ASDFPony Nightmare Night Raffle!
Three days. That’s what the turnaround for Oh Captain was.
Three. Days. From starting the 3D model, to printing not just one, but almost two of her. Incredible. We are really starting to get the hang of this!
As usual, you can commission from us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Alright, you see this? Get a good look. That was two days ago. Since then, we’ve gotten so much further. The Z Endstop is set and calibrated, a spool has been made, the rest of Watch Out has been printed, we’re painting them.
With the eBay auction going for OVER a hundred dollars, our motivation has been incredible. Bench Warmer has been a big success! That means that our Watch Out is going on Auction soon too, once we make the commercial for her. The tumblr’s going to get a big re-design too.
As for the commissions, we’re working on printing Come On! and Oh Captain tonight and tomorrow. Expect a lot more auctions to pop up from us. Remember though, you can get commissions from us for only $50. We’ll be busy all week, and soon we’ll need more work just so we HAVE work.
So folks, if you want custom, posed pony toys. Send us an email at ASDFPrinting@gmail.com and we’ll be able to start a dialog and get you exactly what you want. The turnaround time is likely to be around 3 weeks for working on it, and a week for shipping.
That said, we’ve got some folks to contact and get their shipping address. Fun fact, anywhere in the continental US is only $6 SHIPPING and for international it’s only $10 shipping. Insane, our toys are so cheap on shipping because they are so lightweight and durable! Heh, I’ll admit we’ve had a couple Bench Warmers slip off the table when it got bumped. You can never tell. But still, take good care of them. They are your figures, and they won’t withstand any punishment, their ears and tails are the weakest spots. Otherwise, they’re very tough.
All thanks to the magic of printing. So folks, get out your wallets, and tell us what you want! Check us out in a couple days for all the updates and information, as well as our new page redesign!
Remember to Smile Smile Smile!
However, it’d be boring to tell you that we’ve just been printing, sanding, and painting our commissions. But very soon, we’ll throw a neat little picture spread to show you where we’re at for the moment.
Just to keep everyone on the same page, we’ve not forgotten a single one of our orders. I’ve been researching like crazy on good doll hair, and I might have found a good place to order for a rather screwy pony’s brushable. I’ve been experimenting with smaller prints, aiming to get a good feel for the settings for a blind bag.
The pegasus ponies will be coming soon, as will a battle ready bookworm. Heh. But Benchwarmer and Watch Out! are both being prepared to ship soon, we’ll be contacting people for their shipping addresses and the shipping costs.
Turns out, anywhere in the US for $6, and just about anywhere in the world for $10. The toys weigh a whopping 70 grams. Or just under 2 1/2 ounces. Yeah, they’re lightweight. We’ve dropping a couple of these toys before, but frankly, they don’t suffer any damage from it. They’re durable, lightweight, and with the new smoothing method, looking much nicer than the lined Lyra you see on our eBay auction.
Which, by the way, is still up for grabs at $35 at the time of posting, so it’s still under our normal selling price. You want a chance at a cheaper than standard Lyra, there’s your chance to get one. Plenty of time to sneak in with a nice bid and sweep it up at the last moment.
We greatly appreciate all your support and aid. Really, we just want to make you guys toys you’re happy to own. It’s why we’re not just settling for the standard that the other Lyra is. We’re trying to make better quality, faster and more reliably.
So, which iconic pony would you like to see next?
She does love to sit on everything doesn’t she?
Well this one is for sale. Why this one? Because we made an extra one in our excitement. Originally it was just going to be a painting test, but she doesn’t look all that bad actually. The rest of our toys are going to be much smoother, given that we’ve discovered some new techniques in just the last week alone.
Crazy huh? So, we’re putting her up in hopes that someone would like her for their very own. More awesome stuff to follow, I’m prepping the machine for another run of a very particular party pony.
We have done a fantastic amount of work since we last spake. See, this whole process is a learning experience. And we do appreciate your patience with us. But it’s bizarre for me personal (RabidPeep) to consider what we’re doing. It’s really real life R&D. You know what happened once we figured out what we were messing up?
Three Bench Warmers within two days.
Enchantress a few days later. But then we found out that we couldn’t use the one we printed. There was too much surface area for the seam, and she was curving against herself, no what to get her nose to be seamless even. So, even though she successfully printed, we couldn’t make her work.
Well, we re-sliced her, and now today we’re trying a much more ambitious print. It’s been so much experimenting lately.
And painting, ho boy so much painting experimenting. Reducing the layer visibility has been trying, and we’ve done so many little experiments with failed pieces as test stock. We’ve gotten to a point where the layers are less noticeable, but they are still present.
The actual painting itself, not really that hard. We both come with a nice large background in painting stuff like this. It’s about delivering the highest quality that we can. There’s a few more things we can test, and once we build the next machine for ABS plastic, we may yet be able to eke more improved performance out of that than the PLA we’re working with now, but who’s to say that it won’t have it’s own unique problems?
Bench Warmer is however coming out fantastically, and we can make her very easily now. Enchantress is being worked on, a different cut, might work, might fail into a spitting pile of filament mess. Either way, we’ve been working fairly non-stop at learning our machines, learning our techniques, and improving each time. We do our best to avoid the same mistake twice. Each time, we advance a little bit more.
This is amazing fun.
Well, so goes the adventures of the ASDF Pony Printing. We’re tweaking the machine continuously, making sure to get things behaving well. Right now, a higher quality model requires solving a few issues that weren’t present at lower resolution. Fixing the right-hand z-axis threaded rod is paramount. It can’t be level at the moment, so I’m figuring out why that is. I think it’s a measurement error that prevents the x-axis from being level, so right now I’m trying to identify the location of the measurement issue.
That only involves checking about ten different things, so this might take a bit longer.
I’ll be honest, I’m doing all the work by hand, by myself. Getting help on the IRC for reprap is very handy, but in the end I still have to work with my limited tools, limited funds, and my limited dexterity.
I really wish there was a Hackerspace in my state, that’d make things so much easier. But there’s not, a real pain in the butt.
Don’t worry, we’re going to keep working on this, and deliver the prints you paid for. I just wish we could do it faster, you’ve been waiting on us for a while, and this machine is very much a learning experience.
Until later, that your update for the day!
